• A baby's skull is not fully developed at birth, as it consists of soft, flexible plates of bone that have not yet fused together and this process can take up to 18 months. This allows for the baby’s brain to grow and develop rapidly during the early months of life. However, this softness also makes the skull vulnerable to injury. The fontanelles, or soft spots, on a baby’s head are areas where the bones have not yet joined, leaving the brain unprotected from direct impact. Because of this, it is essential to avoid any contact or pressure to the baby's head, as even minor trauma can potentially lead to serious injury or developmental concerns. It is crucial to ensure a baby's skull remains safe during these early stages of growth. Our baby helmets provide constant head protection from all bumps and tumbles your little one might encounter helping to prevent any serious injury's or problems for your baby.
  • Thats right! Babies that up to 19 months old will fall on average 17 times an hour. Repeated impacts to the head during these tumbles can pose a risk. Babies' skulls are soft and more pliable than those of adults, which allows their brains to grow and develop more easily. However, this also makes them more vulnerable to head injuries, such as bumps, bruises, or, in more serious cases, concussions. The impact of frequent falls can sometimes cause damage to the soft spots on a baby’s head (known as fontanelles) or lead to potential long term effects on brain development if the falls are severe or if there is a pattern of repeated head trauma. At little lids we have created a full head protection helmet to reduce the risk of injury whilst your little ones learn and explore.
  • Unfortunately its true. Head injuries are the most common type of injury in baby falls due to the proportionally larger size and heavier weight of a baby's head compared to their body. As babies begin to explore and develop motor skills like sitting, crawling, and walking, they are more prone to losing their balance and falling forward or backward, often resulting in their head striking the ground or another surface. Since babies’ skulls are softer and still developing, the impact of a fall can cause swelling, bruising, or minor bumps. Head injuries can sometimes lead to more serious conditions, such as concussions, so it's crucial to prevent such an injury from happing with our baby helmets that cushion and protect your baby's head in a fall.

What Parents Should Know

Common Head Injuries in Babies Due to Falls.

Concussion

A concussion in a baby can be serious, as their developing brains are more vulnerable to injury as they have soft skulls that haven't fused together, leaving very vulnerable soft spots in there head. A concussion can potentially lead to long term developmental delays or brain damage if not properly treated. Severe concussions may cause complications such as brain swelling, bleeding, or other forms of brain injury that can lead to long lasting effects on cognitive, motor, and emotional development. In some cases, repeated concussions or more severe injuries can result in permanent damage or even life-threatening conditions. At little lids we want to prevent an injury like a concussion from even accruing with our baby helmets.

Skull Fracture

A skull fracture in a baby can be very serious, as their skulls are still soft and more prone to damage. While some skull fractures may heal with minimal intervention, more severe fractures can lead to complications such as brain damage, bleeding, or pressure on the brain, which could result in long term developmental issues or cognitive impairments. Depending on the severity and location of the fracture, it may also cause swelling or bruising, and in some cases, the bone may push against the brain or disrupt the protective layers surrounding it. If not treated properly, a skull fracture can lead to permanent neurological damage or even be life-threatening. At little lids we want to prevent such an incident from occurring with our baby helmets.

Subdural Hematoma

A subdural hematoma in a baby is a serious condition that occurs when blood collects between the brain and the skull, typically due to a traumatic head injury like a fall. Since babies’ brains are still developing and their skulls are soft, they are more susceptible to this type of injury. A subdural hematoma can put pressure on the brain, potentially leading to brain damage if not treated promptly. Early intervention or is vital for reducing the risk of permanent brain injury. Better than early intervention our baby helmets will play a major roll in preventing something like this from ever happening.

Cranial Nerve Injury

A cranial nerve injury in a baby can occur when a head injury, such as a fall or trauma, damages one or more of the twelve cranial nerves that control essential functions like movement, sensation, and autonomic processes. These nerves are responsible for functions like facial movements, swallowing, eye movement, and breathing. In babies, a cranial nerve injury may lead to difficulties such as trouble feeding, facial weakness, drooping eyelids, or abnormal eye movements. The baby may also have difficulty turning their head or exhibit poor coordination. This can cause lasting impairments if not properly treated. Our baby helmets will cushion and support your baby's head in the event of a fall helping prevent an injury like this happening.

Our Baby Helmets

Our baby helmets are designed with advanced safety features to provide optimal protection against head injuries during everyday activities. Crafted with lightweight, shock absorbing IXEP foam and cotton liner the helmets effectively cushion and distribute the force of impact, reducing the risk of trauma to a baby’s delicate head. The soft yet durable design ensures comfort while maintaining high impact resistance, offering peace of mind for parents. Whether during playtime, learning to walk, or exploring the world, our helmets protect babies from potential falls and bumps, promoting both safety and confidence as they grow and develop.
  • We use IXEP foam technology in our baby helmets as it protects a baby's head in a fall by providing excellent shock absorption and impact distribution. When a baby falls, the foam compresses upon impact, effectively reducing the amount of force that reaches the skull. This helps to minimize the risk of injury by spreading the energy of the fall over a larger surface area rather than allowing it to concentrate on a small part of the head. The foam’s lightweight and soft yet durable nature ensures that it provides cushioning without being bulky, offering both comfort and protection. This makes IXEP foam an ideal material for baby helmets, as it can help safeguard a baby's delicate head during falls while supporting healthy development.
  • The cotton liner around the head in our baby helmets ensures a soft and comfortable fit, making it ideal for delicate skin. This soft, breathable fabric gently rests against the baby's head, preventing any irritation or discomfort during wear. The cotton liner also helps to wick away moisture, keeping the baby cool and dry even during active play. With its gentle touch and snug fit, the cotton liner enhances the overall comfort of the helmet, allowing babies to wear it for extended periods without fuss. Combined with the protective IXEP foam, the cotton liner ensures that the helmet not only offers superior safety but also a cozy, irritation-free experience for your baby.
  • Our baby helmets are thoughtfully designed with an adjustable fit that caters to your child’s growth from 6 to 48 months. Whether your baby is just starting to crawl or taking their first steps, the helmet can be easily resized to ensure a snug, secure fit at every stage of development. Featuring adjustable straps and a customizable inner padding system, the helmet adapts to the changing shape and size of your baby’s head, providing a comfortable and safe experience. Whether it's for protection during active play, outdoor adventures, or learning to walk, our helmets are built to offer peace of mind by staying in place, offering reliable protection as your little one explores their world.
